Stop Second Guessing Your Footsteps in the Austin Area
Every Texan knows that fire ant bites hurt, but did you know that they can prove fatal to pets and people with severe allergies? So, obviously, they’re not something you want to mess around with.
What Is a Fire Ant and How Do You Know If You Have Them?
Fire ants are an extremely territorial species of ants known for defending their nests with fiery passion. Living in colonies numbering between 100,000 and 500,000, their large numbers pose a public health risk. In the Austin area, you’ll find two species of these rust-colored ants. The imported red fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, and the native Solenopsis geminate. Virtually identical in appearance, both species can deliver painful stings and burning bites. The extensiveness of their colonies and their multiple queen structure makes eliminating them difficult.
In and around Round Rock, you’ll see colonies get particularly active between late spring and early fall. This is when you’re most likely to notice damage to your property.
Determining if you have an infestation means keeping your eyes open for ant mounds. Unlike carpenter ants, fire ant mounds do not have a crater or opening at their center. Instead, they rely on an intricate network of tiny, underground pathways to get along. If left untreated, their colonies can reach 12 to 18 inches in height.
